LENT 2019

ASH WEDNESDAY COMMUNION   This Weds

Start Lent at our special communion service for Ash Wednesday with the option of ‘ashes’  at 6.30pm in St.Mary’s on 6th March.

Would you like a Book for Lent?

CHILDREN’S CORNER LIBRARY BOOKS

Over the years worshippers have been generous in lending/giving books to our library – thank you.  Although one or two still borrow books we are no longer going to host the library in favour of further developing the children’s corner.   If any folk would like to ‘recover’ their books from the table in St.Mary’s over the next two Sundays then please do so with our gratitude.  Others may like to look at the books and see if there are any that you’d like to take – perhaps to read for Lent or thereafter; you’d be welcome to have them.

TALKING JESUS COURSE   Lent 2019

The CofE joined partners to undertake some national research asking: What do people in England know and believe about Jesus? What do they really think of us, his followers?  The results were as staggering as they were encouraging.  Using this information an upbeat 6 week course for all church members has been produced; each week introduced by a short film.  Some of our home groups will use the course before Easter and others after; whilst Church Alive will use and discuss the films from 3rd March.  Ideal for Lent, we’re sure you’ll be fascinated, encouraged and challenged.

The sessions are: Everyone Talking Jesus ❖ What Motivates Us

Living Distinctively ❖ Our Story ❖ God’s Story ❖ Go On

PARISH BOUNDARY PRAYER WALK  27th

Whether for the whole 8 miles, or just the first mile along Stokes Bay, those who wish are invited to walk the parish boundary with Andy Norris starting from GAFIRS at 1.30pm on Wednesday 27th March.  We’ll stop at ‘junctions’ along the way to pray for the community; and for a cuppa too!  Weather dependent – not in rain!

SCHOOL FOUNDATION GOVERNOR for AJS

Being a school governor on behalf of the church is a very significant voluntary role.  We’re seeking a member of the congregation/electoral roll who may be able to offer their time and skills to serve Alverstoke Junior School.  If it could be you called to this roll then have a word with Andy Norris who’d be pleased to chat, thank you.

Join a wholly NEW ELECTORAL ROLL in 2019

plus data and photo consent forms.  Forms for the six yearly Roll renewal plus data and photo consent are available at the back of church.  Those on the current roll have one in a named envelope whilst all others are welcome to take a non-addressed copy.

AFRICA PARTNERSHIPS    visit on 7th April Thank you so much to all who’ve raised money and given to our Africa Partnerships.  You’re ongoing support for Christian Aid in Ghana and of CHASE Africa in Kenya is wonderful.   We’ve now raised the balance of £2500 for Christian Aid (total £5000) and so we look forward to welcoming Christian Aid’s Stephen Dominy to St.Mary’s on 7th April to tell us about the Ghana project and receive a cheque.  Our partnerships continue until the end of 2019 – when the final balance of our fundraising will be given to CHASE Africa.

THANKS FOR CLEANING & CURRY!

Many thanks to all who turned up at yesterday to freshen up the church with your cleaning, polishing, mending and caring; and also to the team who hosted last night’s fabulous curry and quiz.

D-DAY 75th : Researcher Required!

For June we’ll prepare a reflective space at the war memorial for the 75th Anniversary commemoration of D-Day.  To help with this it would be helpful to know if any of those who are named upon our war memorial from WW2 were involved in the D-Day landings –

or of other parish veterans too.  Is there is anyone who’d be willing to research the names online etc and find such details by May?  If so we’d be very grateful, thank you. Please have a word with Andy.  Gosport Borough are hosting a Stokes Bay event for 1st-2nd June.

CAN YOU HELP MAKE CRAFTS?   from Kate

Kate’s on the look out for anyone willing to pre-prepare crafts for children’s activities.  If you are interested please call Kate, Families Minister, to arrange (over a cuppa?) 07986009942 Thank You.
