‘YOU KNOW ME BY NAME’ in September
In a congregation of over 200 most of us, except for a few very gifted people, struggle to remember names. Groups (like the WI) who automatically put on their name badges when they meet find it adds much to their fellowship. Hence, we’d like to ask everyone who regularly worships at St.Mary’s to make for themselves at home a NAME BADGE with which they are comfortable simply stating the name by which they like to be called. Then we invite everyone to wear their badges during worship and activities in September and October… in fact is there any reason to stop! We’ll also make name badge making resources available in church at services in September. THANK YOU for your co-operation in this which will enhance our congregational fellowship.
A LIVING CHURCH INVITES PEOPLE
We always look forward to welcoming visitors and newcomers -something which especially seems to happen in September and October. The ‘welcome’ guests receive will determine whether we can enjoy seeing them again or not! We’d like to ask regular worshippers to regard September and October as months in which to determine to invite someone to come along to church with you. We all love to be invited to things, and the same is true for many people who’d come to church if only someone invited them!
Who can you invite to join you this September?
To help you think about a suitable service for your friend then the following list shows special dates for September…

AUTUMN FOCUS ON OUR HOME GROUPS
Both in the Bible and in church life it is small groups of a dozen people meeting in homes which offer the key place of belonging within a church; much like Jesus and his 12 disciples! They afford the place of caring relationships, friendship and growing of our faith through scripture and prayer in a much deeper way than Sunday services alone can offer. In this respect they are the bedrock of christian life and foundational to personal and church growth – especially in larger churches where it is hard to know everyone or be known! If you want that ‘sense’ of belonging then the key place to ‘belong’ is through one of our midweek groups.
Through August we will be seeking to strengthen our small groups for the start of the Autumn. Andy Norris, Chris Richardson or Diana Dow would be delighted to hear from you if you’d like to join a group in September. Please contact them, ideally by email, and they’ll get back to you later in August – thank you.
SEPTEMBER HOSPITALITY WEEK from 9/9
Following the success of the trial hospitality week in the Spring our pastoral visiting teams are again encouraging us all to invite someone in the congregations or wider church community (perhaps those who can’t get along any more!) for a cuppa or a supper – out and about or at home – during the week starting 9th September or thereafter! A very simple but significant idea to express our love and care for one another – it would be such a great encouragement to so many. Let’s be invitational and get together with that extra someone/people expressing the Lord’s care for one another.
COLLAGE – AUTUMN POSTCARD
As always planned, we hope to use the passport photo collage in St.Mary’s as the background for a new postcard this autumn. If you’d like your picture to be on the collage as a celebration of our community then please add one soon. If you’d prefer to remove your photo prior to the postcard (tiny as it will be) then you’re invited to do so during August. Thank you.

Can you help us for some of the time between 12-4.00pm on 29th Sept? If so then Jo Northey would love to hear from you.

I was a guide in the Garden Tomb Jerusalem a few years ago and am returning to that amazing area with a group from Gosport churches in the Spring. The full 11/12 day holiday is organised by Oak Hall Christian holidays who have been doing these tours for 40+ years. You are invited to come to The Parish Centre at 3pm on Sunday 9th September 2018 to pick up a brochure, discuss the programme and of course confirm the price which will include flights, hotels, transfer & tours, guides, tips plus Breakfast and Dinner daily. (It will be about £1600 per person sharing a twin/ double room… with shared coach/minibus travel to Heathrow from Gosport and the local area as a small “extra”. We are hoping to travel just after the very busy Easter period.
Please write if you would prefer the final details by e mail.

FLOWER GUILD LEADERSHIP – Thank you
St.Mary’s Church Flower Guild provide all the wonderful floral displays which are much appreciated. In recent years the Guild has been faithfully chaired by Meg Hutton-Dutton who’s leadership and creativity has led to some wonderful occasions. We’re so very grateful to Meg for her hard work and vision as she now hands over the leadership of the Guild to Sue Craven – and thank you Sue and all the members of the Guild.
PARISH CENTRE LUNCHEONS – Thank you
Many folk have valued the monthly lunches which have been provided by our church catering team for the last few years. The lunches have been popular, hearty in friendship and in food, themed in decoration, and have provided a great service to our community. Sadly the team are needing to stop the lunches and are very sorry about having to make such a decision.
The members of the catering team have been very loyal and committed and we are very grateful to each one of them for the ministry of hospitality they have offered in Christ. Our heartfelt thanks go to Carol Workman who has led the team, and to Margaret, Rosemary, Norma and Pam who have all worked so hard.

Luffingham for whom a memorial service will be held in St.Mary’s on Thursday 23rd August at 2.00pm. Please hold Dr Jo Luffingham and their family in your prayers at this sad time.
IN MEMORY OF KAY LANCASTER – Chairs!
We hope that Kay’s many friends may like to help us remember her through a significant refurbishment project in St.Francis’ for which we are seeking donations in her memory throughout August. We shall see what Kay’s memorial fund totals in September with a view to purchasing six arm chairs and towards replacing as many other chairs as possible – ideally 30. Kay did in fact start the research in to providing new chairs for St.Francis’ and such a resourcing memorial seems to be a very fitting investment for the future mission and worship of the church in her memory. The whole project may cost about £3000 and so any gifts for St.Francis’ via the Parish Office or to Beverly Harris (St.Francis’ Treasurer) from those who cherished Kay would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your support.
